Is Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 the best Android smartwatch? – Review after one month of use

  • Last month, Samsung launched its new flagship smartwatch, the Galaxy Watch 4, and I’ve had it on my wrist ever since. The price of Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 (44mm) – Bluetooth variant in the Indian market is Rs 26,999. This new watch of Samsung is very good in terms of features and price. This could have been a tough competition for the Apple Watch as well, but the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 series only supports Android devices, which could be a major weakness for this watch. Along with this, many powerful features are also included in this watch. So let us know, how was my one month journey with Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and is it the best smartwatch for Android phones?

design

  • First of all, talking about design, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 comes in two sizes – 40mm and 44mm. It can be purchased in Black, Silver, Pink, and Green color options. I am using Galaxy Watch 4 (44mm) -Bluetooth variant in silver color. The special thing is that the 44mm size of the watch is also quite compact. It comes with a 20mm sweat proof strap, which remains comfortable and fit even on thin wrists.
  • It would not be wrong at all if you call Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 the sleekest watch among all the premium smartwatches present in the market. It has been introduced with an aluminum case, which makes it slim and light in weight. It has a rounded dial. There are two buttons on the side of the watch, one is Home and the other is Back button.
  • Samsung has tried to keep the design quite simple. The bezel of the watch may seem a bit thick to you, but there is a special reason for this, this bezel is actually a rotating touch dial, on which you can control the watch by moving your fingers. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is a watch designed to support an active lifestyle. Which does not cause any problem even if worn for a long time.

display

  • The 1.4-inch Super AMOLED display is quite sharp and responsive. The resolution of the display is 450X450 pixels, which looks quite attractive. The auto brightness feature in this Samsung watch works well in both indoor and outdoor conditions.

user interface

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 works on One UI version 3.0 based on the new Wear OS. To link the watch to your Android phone, you need the Samsung Galaxy Wearables app and some plug ins. These come pre-installed on Samsung phones. However, they can be easily installed on smartphones of other brands also. With the help of this app, you can choose your favorite watch face from many watch faces.
  • If you use a Samsung phone, then you will get the same feel as the phone on the watch UI. Wear OS also syncs quite well with Samsung smartphones. Any application you install on your phone is automatically installed on your watch.
  • Of all the apps available on the watch, I have used the Samsung Health app the most. It keeps record of your calorie burn, food intake, active calories, steps, sleep, active heart rate, stress and many more things.
  • Not only this, Galaxy Watch4 generates sleep score by analyzing your REM sleep, light sleep, deep sleep and how much time you did not sleep at night. The watch has more than 90 sports twists. That means there is something for almost every activity. Even if you forget to turn on Activity Mode while exercising, the auto-detection feature of the watch automatically senses activity and turns on the mode.
  • But here I would like to draw your attention to the cycling mode, which has also disappointed me. Most of the time this activity mode becomes Auto-Pause while cycling, hence the Auto-Pause feature has to be turned off during cycling.
  • Another specialty of Samsung Galaxy Watch4 is the Body Composition Measurement Tool available in it – by placing two fingers on both the buttons of the watch, you can measure skeletal muscle, fat mass, basal metabolic rate, body water and body fat. However, its accuracy is limited. I can’t say anything about it, but this is a very advanced and helpful feature.
  • The company has given a bioactive sensor in the watch which combines optical heart rate sensor, bioelectrical impedance analysis sensor and electrical heart rate sensor to ensure health tracking features. The specialty of this latest watch is that it also has electrocardiogram i.e. ECG support.
  • Other things like changing music, checking messages or other notifications, connecting or disarming the watch can be done seamlessly from the Galaxy Watch4, but you have to use your phone to manage app permissions.

Specifications and Performance

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 has 1.5GB RAM and 16GB ROM. However, you can only use 7.6GB ROM. But still this memory seems fine for a smartwatch. The watch has a dual core processor with 1.18Ghz clock speed, which is capable of performing all tasks easily. Besides, you also get Samsung Knox Security in it. • Here you also get Bluetooth v5.0, dual band WIFI, 4G LTE (optional) and NFC. Apart from this, GPS, A-GPS, Bluetooth, GLONASS, Beidou and Galileo support is included. Also included are Accelerometer, Barometer, Gyro sensor, Geomagnetic sensor and light sensor.
  • This 44mm size Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 has a 361mAh battery. The company claims 40 hours of backup. However, by using simple features, I have got only one to one and a half day backup from this watch. Also here I found the magnets of the watch and charger a little loose, which should have been given a little better. In the Indian market, the price of Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 (44mm) – Bluetooth variant has been kept at Rs 26,999. decision

  • After using Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 for almost a month, I would like to say that the company has done a good job with its new flagship watch. This is a good gift especially for Android users. Samsung has taken great care of premium design, health features, hardware, style everything. The design cannot be called perfect. But the combination of hardware and software definitely makes it a perfect smartwatch.
